Julie Stage, who is a lawyer for whale activist Paul Watson, says the Justice Department has told her it expects to decide whether Watson can be extradited to Japan within the next 14 days.
“The decision regarding extradition will be made by the Ministry of Justice. They are two different tracks. The ministry emailed me yesterday and informed me that they expect to make a decision within two weeks.” – Julia Stage
Paul Watson has been imprisoned in Greenland in Nuuk since July.
Japan wants him extradited and prosecuted over an incident in Antarctica in 2010.
Here, according to the Japanese authorities, Watson helped to damage a whaling ship and also prevented Japanese whalers from carrying out their work. One crew member was injured, it said.
Watson himself pleads not guilty and has appealed the judge’s order to extend the incarceration on the spot.
Julie Stage also says that the Ministry of Justice has stated that it has asked Japan for additional information before deciding whether Paul Watson should be extradited.
On Monday, there will be a hearing in the Court of Greenland on whether Paul Watson should continue to be imprisoned at the Institution in Nuuk.
