Dana Point, California — Captain Paul Watson was presented with a Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2026 Ohana Festival, recognizing more than five decades of work protecting marine wildlife and defending the world’s oceans.
The award was presented personally by Pearl Jam frontman Eddie Vedder, a longtime supporter of Watson and his ocean conservation work. Curated by Vedder, the Ohana Festival has become known for bringing together music, conservation, and environmental advocacy. Watson returned to the festival as a featured storyteller, appearing in The Cove, Ohana’s space dedicated to conservation and environmental issues.
For more than five decades, Watson has been at the forefront of ocean conservation, becoming particularly known for his direct-action approach to protecting marine wildlife. In 2022, he founded the Captain Paul Watson Foundation, where he continues to utilize bold, non-violent tactics in defense of marine life.
Throughout his career, Watson has received international recognition for his conservation efforts. He received the Genesis Award for Lifetime Achievement in 1998 and was named by TIME magazine in 2000 as one of the Top 20 Environmental Heroes of the 20th Century. He also received the Amazon Peace Prize in 2007, the Jules Verne Award in 2012, and was inducted into the U.S. Animal Rights Hall of Fame.
The 2026 presentation carried additional significance because of Ohana Festival’s history with Watson. Following Watson’s arrest in 2024, Vedder used the Ohana stage to publicly call attention to his situation and urge for support. Two years later, Watson returned to the festival as a featured storyteller and recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award.
The recognition comes as Watson and the Captain Paul Watson Foundation continue their work on the front lines of ocean conservation. In July, Watson’s ship, The Bandero, was seized in Iceland following a confrontation with a whaling vessel that fled back to port. The incident drew international attention and renewed focus on Iceland’s commercial whaling industry.
In September, the Icelandic government announced plans to propose legislation that would ban commercial whaling beginning in February 2027 — a development that could mark a significant turning point in the country’s decades-long whaling industry.
For Watson, the Lifetime Achievement Award recognizes a career defined by a singular mission: protecting marine life and defending the ocean through direct action and intervention. More than 50 years after he first took to the water as an ocean defender, Watson continues that work through the Captain Paul Watson Foundation.
