🌊 Who can apply:
Anyone 18 and older is welcome to apply! Our crew comes from all walks of life and from all over the world — we’ve had volunteers aged 18 to 75. No prior experience at sea? No problem! You’ll learn the ropes from our experienced mariners and veteran crew once you’re on board.
⏳ How long is each mission?
We ask crew members to commit to 3–4 months at sea. It takes time and energy to train new volunteers, and frequent turnover may interfere with the mission. That said, ship life is intense and requires a lot of hard work and dedication — so we definitely encourage taking a well-earned break after a few months on board.
⚓ Is preference given to professional mariners?
Yes — we rely on licensed and experienced mariners to lead our operations and ensure the ship runs safely and smoothly. That said, not every role requires experience! If you’re hardworking and eager to learn, there’s plenty of opportunity to join as deck crew or in support roles.
✈️ Do I need to pay my own travel expenses?
Yes. If you’re selected, we’ll give you a specific date and port to join the ship — you’ll be responsible for arranging and funding your travel to get there, obtaining necessary visas and travel insurance. You also are required to have the means to return home from wherever the mission ends.
🛏️ What is accommodation like onboard?
Life at sea is all about sharing space. Cabins are small but functional — you’ll have a bunk, a small closet or storage area for your belongings, and you’ll be sharing the space with at least one other crew member. Cabin assignments aren’t always based on gender, so be prepared to live and work closely with a diverse team. It’s cozy, communal, and part of what makes ship life so unique!
🥗Will food be provided?
Absolutely! We serve three delicious vegan meals a day — plus snacks and treats when available. You’re also welcome to bring your own vegan non-perishable goodies (which must be stored in airtight containers in your cabin).
🧭 Am I guaranteed a position on board?
No, you are not guaranteed a position on board. We match available roles with your skills and availability. If a position opens up that fits your application, we’ll be in touch to arrange an interview. Until then, hang tight — we review every application carefully.
🚢 What happens after I’m selected as crew?
Once you’ve passed the interview process and are officially offered a spot, we’ll coordinate with you on a specific date and location to join the ship. You’ll receive a set of welcome guidelines that include important information on what to pack and how to prepare. You’ll also need to arrange any necessary visas and make sure you have valid travel and medical insurance.
🐬If I’m selected as crew, does that mean I’ll be part of a campaign?
Not necessarily. Being selected as crew means you’re part of the team — but campaign plans may change – you need to be flexible! However, the best way to increase your chances of joining a campaign at sea is by contributing during the crucial preparation phase in port. Ships don’t sail themselves — and those who help get them ready demonstrate their commitment and reliability will be given preference to join campaigns.
🧳What should I pack for my time onboard?
You’ll get a packing list once you’re confirmed, but think practical and durable: closed-toe shoes, work clothes you don’t mind getting dirty, toiletries, and any personal essentials. Space is limited, so pack smart — and skip the hard-shell luggage!
🧠 What kind of training will I receive?
New crew go through onboard orientation and safety training when they arrive. You’ll also get hands-on training in your department — whether that’s on deck, in the galley, bridge or engine room support roles. You’ll be learning every day, from experienced crew and by doing.
🌍 Where do your ships go?
Our ships travel around the world, often to remote or environmentally sensitive areas. Mission locations vary based on current campaigns — from the Southern Ocean to the Mediterranean.
📱 Will I have access to the internet or phone service?
Not regularly. While at sea, connectivity is limited or non-existent. Some ports may offer Wi-Fi or allow you to get a local SIM. We recommend telling your family and friends you’ll be offline for stretches at a time — it’s part of the experience!
🔁 Can I Volunteer More Than Once?
Absolutely! Before you leave the ship, your department head will provide feedback on your time aboard. If things go well and you’re keen to return, just reach out to the crewing team — many of our most dedicated crew members come back year after year.
🥗Why are our ships vegan?
Because protecting the ocean means not contributing to its harm. Adhering to a plant-based diet on board ensures we are not supporting the commercial fishing industry or animal agriculture, both of which are major drivers of ocean destruction, climate change, and biodiversity loss. It reduces our environmental impact and keeps our actions aligned with our mission to defend ocean life. All volunteers must respect and follow the ship’s vegan policy while on board.
